Is the Irish theory test hard?

How many questions do you need to get right to pass?

The car test and the motorcycle test are separate exams with the same shape. Citizens Information lists BW against B, BE and W, and the A test against AM, A1, A2 and A. The car pass mark asks for 87.5% correct, a higher share than truck, bus, combined (74.3%) and the module tests (75%), our arithmetic.

The test is multiple choice with one answer ticked. A short tutorial with 2 practice questions comes first. You can skip or mark questions and come back inside the time, then review and change answers before you finish.

What is the theory test pass rate in Ireland?

69.9% of the 207,089 theory tests delivered in 2024 were passed. That is our division of two figures in the Road Safety Authority Annual Report 2024 (printed pages 7 and 43): 144,708 passed, 207,089 delivered. How we turn those counts into a rate is on the methodology page.

It counts tests, not people, every category together, one national year. It is not a first attempt rate: someone who sits three times counts three times. Our arithmetic: 62,381 delivered tests were not passes (30.1%). 26,992 more tests were scheduled than delivered. The report does not say what that gap is made of.

We found no theory test pass rate by category, centre, county, language, age, gender or attempt number in the sources checked on 15 and 16 September 2026. No published figure we found shows the motorcycle test is harder than the car test. Earlier and later RSA annual reports were not opened for this page.

What the test can ask you

The Road Safety Authority names five topics "such as" rules of the road, risk perception, eco-driving, hazard awareness and safe driving behaviour on Theory test: what it is. Citizens Information calls the fifth good driving behaviour. Both names are shown; the list is not a full syllabus. Lessons: Learn.

Questions are selected at random from the question bank for the relevant test sections (theorytest.ie FAQs). The operator says the bank holds a large number of items. The size is not published.

The current test went live on 1 July 2024 after a 2023 bank revision, with new and improved images. The count and pass mark did not change (theorytest.ie, June 2024). The share of image questions is not published.

No clip based hazard perception section appears in any format description we read on 15 September 2026. Hazard awareness is a knowledge topic: see hazard awareness. A Road Safety Strategy action to examine a hazard perception test is marked complete, and we found no plan or date for adding a clip section to that date. See theory test changes.

Where marks slip away

No published source says why candidates fail, so this section works from the rules themselves. These are not measured causes.

Signs come from two rulebooks. Regulatory signs, markings and lights are in the Traffic Signs Regulations 2025 as amended in 2026; warning, information and roadworks signs are in the Traffic Signs Manual. Most warning signs are black on a yellow diamond (Chapter 6); most roadworks warnings are black on an orange diamond (Chapter 8); as the logic generally adopted, red bordered white discs restrict, a red diagonal bar prohibits, and white bordered blue discs are mandatory (Chapter 5). The operator gives no feedback on individual questions, saying those exact items are unlikely to come up again. With a random draw from a bank of unpublished size, the rule is what carries over.

A three week study plan, worked through day by day

This is our suggested plan for a car (BW) test booked for day 21. No study time is published by the Road Safety Authority, the test operator or Citizens Information. On a topic set of 20, 18 correct (90%) is the lowest score at or above 87.5%; 17 is below it. On a numbered set of 40, the target is 35. Mark a slow question and come back; the real test allows that.

• Day 1: rules of the road, speed limits, Set 1.
• Day 2: roundabouts, regulatory signs, road markings, Set 2, quiz Set 1.
• Day 3: warning, roadworks, traffic signals, markings quiz, Set 3.
• Day 4: risk perception, stopping distances, Set 1.
• Day 5: hazard awareness, vulnerable road users, Set 1.
• Day 6: safe driving behaviour, eco-driving, Set 1. Eco-driving has no topic set today.
• Day 7: reopen every miss. A topic below 18 of 20 gets a second set in week 2 where one exists; safe driving behaviour has one set.

Motorcycle (AM) uses the same format: motorcycle practice and the motorcycle mock. Truck (C) is 100 questions in 120 minutes with 74 to pass; numbered sets are 50, where 37 is 74%. Use truck practice and the truck mock. For bus, start at the bus hub only: this site does not yet hold enough questions for a 100 question mock.

What the score report tells you after a fail

On the day you see pass or fail on screen. An emailed link then shows category areas answered correctly or incorrectly (theorytest.ie FAQs). Citizens Information calls them categories recommended for further study; the customer charter says general topic areas of weakness in writing. Individual questions are not named, and the category names are not published.

Sitting it again: attempts, waiting time and fees

There is no limit on attempts. The fee is paid each time: 45 euro for car or motorcycle, 72 euro for truck or bus, 84 euro for the combined test, under regulation 5(4) of S.I. No. 52 of 2003 as substituted by S.I. No. 486 of 2014. See theory test cost and failed the theory test.

theorytest.ie strongly advises waiting at least 3 complete business days. rsa.ie says you may apply after three days. Both wordings are shown.

A rescore costs 15 euro, refunded if the marking was wrong according to the customer charter and Citizens Information. The window is 10 days on the FAQ and 10 working days on the charter and Citizens Information.

A pass certificate lasts 2 years. The FAQ counts from the date of your test; regulation 6(2) of S.I. No. 52 of 2003 counts from the date it is issued. You need one in force before a first learner permit (S.I. No. 537 of 2006, reg. 20(5)(a)(v)). A learner permit guide will cover the steps after a pass, including essential driver training.

• Question bank size, and the share of questions with an image.
• Score report category names, and a published rule that deducts marks for a wrong answer.
• A clip based hazard perception section, or a plan or date for adding one, to 15 September 2026.
• A single voiceover count: 21 on theorytest.ie for the car test, 20 on Citizens Information, 7 on an rsa.ie page that is the only list to count Irish. See theory test languages.
• One appeal window (10 days or 10 working days) and one cancellation notice (7 calendar days, 5 business days, or five days).
• One name for the fifth topic, a pass rate by category or attempt, an average score, or a list of the hardest questions.
