How Irish sign codes work

A code is a set of family letters, three digits and any suffix, written exactly as the document prints it. Five families are prescribed in the Regulations: RUS for regulatory signs, RRM for road markings, RPC for pedestrian crossings, RVMS for variable message signs and RTS for traffic and tram signals.

The rest of the codes you meet come from the Traffic Signs Manual: W and WVMS for warnings, P for the plates that go under a sign, F and T for information and tourist signs, WK for roadworks, M for markings the Regulations do not prescribe, and S for other signals such as pedestrian countdown timers.

Suffix letters are part of the code, not decoration. A sign whose code ends in L and its partner ending in R are two different signs, and in the manual families the mirror image is never the other hand of the same drawing.

Which document is in force

S.I. No. 433 of 2025 is the current signs instrument. It revoked the signs regulations that came before it (S.I. No. 200 of 2024 and S.I. No. 618 of 2024) and has been amended once, by S.I. No. 205 of 2026, which added the bus priority facility sign RVMS 104 and the line RRM 042 and substituted the motorway edge line regulations.

The Traffic Signs Manual is a Direction from the Minister to road authorities under section 95(16) of the Road Traffic Act 1961, not an enactment. Its chapter list on the Department of Transport traffic signs website, roadguidelines.ie, names one set of chapters as current while the older set is still served on gov.ie. The official sources disagree, so we follow the chapter list on the Department site and name each chapter by number, title and date.

Irish and English on road signs

Place names on information signs are shown in Irish and in English. There are two exceptions: a destination in a Gaeltacht area covered by a placenames order carries only the declared Irish version, under section 33 of the Official Languages Act 2003, and a name whose Irish and English spellings are near identical is shown once, in Irish.

All other fixed information and warning signs, text plates included, are bilingual. The Regulations prescribe bilingual plates themselves: the plate that exempts riders from a turn ban reads "Except Cyclists - Ach Amháin Rothaithe" under Reg. 14(5).

Speed limits are in kilometres per hour

Every Irish speed limit sign shows a metric figure with km/h beneath it on a white disc with a red border (Reg. 33). Speed limits moved to metric values with Part 2 of the Road Traffic Act 2004 and the signs amendment made under it, and no current Irish sign shows miles per hour.

A theory question that offers a limit in miles per hour is testing that, and so is a question about a sign whose figure is in white on a black disc: that one is the periodic limit sign, lit only while its limit applies (Reg. 34).

Reading a family page

Each family page lists the signs with the code, the title used by the document that prescribes them and the legal reference, so you can open the regulation or the schedule and read the wording for yourself.

Where a sign is prescribed in words with no drawing in the instrument, the regulation text is the design. Where the drawing exists, it is a small image in the schedule, useful for checking a design rather than for teaching one.
