How we handle your personal data

This notice explains what personal data this site processes, why, who receives it and the rights you have under the GDPR. The site has no accounts and never asks your age. Analytics and advertising cookies are set only if you agree to them.

Our representative in the European Union

The operator of this site is based outside the European Union, so we have appointed a representative inside it under Article 27 of the GDPR. You or a data protection authority can write to the representative about data protection questions, as well as or instead of writing to us.

The name and contact details of the representative are on a separate page, which we keep out of search engines because they are personal details.

What we process

Your cookie choice. When you accept or reject cookies, the site stores your choice and the date you made it in your browser, on this device only, so it can respect it. It is not sent to us.
Analytics data. Google Analytics records details such as the pages viewed, the type of device and browser, the country or region of the visit and the page you came from. What it collects before and after you choose is set out under Analytics.
Advertising data, once ads run on the site and only if you agree to advertising cookies. Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar identifiers to show ads, limit how often the same ad appears, measure ads and detect fraud. Ads on this site are set up not to be personalised.
Contact messages. If you email us, we receive your email address, your message, anything you attach, and your name if your email account shows it.
Server records. Our web server logs basic details of each request, such as the IP address, browser details, the page requested and the time.

We do not ask for your age, payment details or any account details, because there are no accounts. The only name we ever receive is one that comes with an email you send us.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to see which lessons and tests learners use and where pages go wrong, so we know what to fix. Nothing it collects is used to personalise ads.

Before you choose, and if you reject analytics:

It runs in a cookieless mode. It does not set or read cookies and does not store an identifier for you on your device.
Your IP address and browser details still reach Google, because every request a browser makes carries them.
Google Analytics receives the page, the time, the page you came from and a random number for that page load, so visits can be counted in total.

Only after you accept analytics are these cookies set:

_ga: Google Analytics. Tells one browser from another across visits. Lasts 2 years.
_ga_<id>: Google Analytics. Keeps track of the current visit to this site. Lasts 2 years.

The Google page below explains what each cookie does and gives the two year lifetime for _ga and _ga_<id>.

To change your mind, use the Cookie settings link at the foot of any page. Turning analytics off returns Google Analytics to its cookieless mode and deletes the _ga and _ga_<id> cookies this site set in your browser. We ask again after six months.

Why we process it, and the legal basis

Consent choices: To record and respect your choice. Legal basis: our legal obligation to be able to show that consent was given (GDPR Article 6(1)(c), with Article 7(1)).
Analytics: To see which pages help learners and what needs fixing. Legal basis: your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time.
Advertising: To pay for a site that is free to use. Legal basis: your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time.
Measurements while consent is refused: To count visits and ad activity in total and see where pages go wrong, using the cookieless modes described under Analytics. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in knowing that the site works and is funded (Article 6(1)(f)).
Contact messages: To reply to you. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering messages people send us (Article 6(1)(f)).
Server and security records: To keep the site available and protect it from abuse. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure website (Article 6(1)(f)).

Who receives it

Google Ireland Limited, for Google Analytics and advertising. Third parties, including Google, may place and read cookies on your browser. How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Advertising partners, once ads run on the site, through a consent platform certified by Google under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. Its consent panel will name each partner before you agree.
Cloudflare, which runs the domain name system for the site. Page requests go straight to our web server, not through Cloudflare.
Contabo GmbH, in Germany, which hosts our web server.
Google, which provides the email service we use to receive and answer contact messages.

We never sell personal data.

Transfers outside the European Economic Area

Some of the providers above process data outside the European Economic Area, for example in the United States. Where that happens, the transfer must rely on a safeguard recognised by the GDPR, such as an adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses.

Our web server is hosted in Germany, inside the European Economic Area. For Google, which can process data in the United States, the transfer relies on Google LLC certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and on the standard contractual clauses in Google data processing terms.

How long we keep it

Consent choices: No longer than six months. After that the site asks you again, as the Data Protection Commission advises.
Analytics cookies: As listed under Analytics, and deleted from your browser when you turn analytics off.
Analytics data: Deleted automatically by Google Analytics at the end of the retention period set in our account, which is no longer than 14 months.
Contact messages: Until we have replied and dealt with any follow-up, then deleted.
Server and security records: Our web server keeps its access log for 14 days, then deletes it.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

see the personal data we hold about you
have it corrected if it is wrong
have it deleted
ask us to limit how we use it
object to processing based on our legitimate interests
receive data you gave us in a portable format
withdraw consent at any time, using the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page, which takes no more steps than agreeing did

Automated decisions

We make no decisions about you by automated means.

Do you have to give us data?

No. You can use the whole site without giving us any personal data beyond what every browser sends when it loads a page. If you email us, we use your email address only to reply.

Changes to this notice

When what we process changes, for example when a provider is added, this notice is updated before the change takes effect. The cookie policy changes at the same time.
