What is the driving test pass rate in Ireland?
Car driving tests in Ireland passed at 52.4% over the 12 months to August 2026, on 267,818 tests, and centre rates ranged from 42.1% at Waterford and Carlow to 70.9% at Newcastle West, derived from the Central Statistics Office PxStat table ROA30.

How many EDT lessons do you need in Ireland?
A first car (category B) learner permit holder must complete 12 Essential Driver Training lessons, each at least one hour, with an approved driving instructor before the driving test, or 6 after holding a full, valid, non-exchangeable foreign car licence for 2 years (S.I. No. 173 of 2011 as amended, Irish Statute Book, read 16 September 2026).

Is the Irish Theory Test Hard? Pass Mark and Pass Rate
Is the Irish theory test hard?
Most theory tests delivered in Ireland in 2024 were passed, but the margin is small: the car and motorcycle tests need 35 correct out of 40, and the Road Safety Authority Annual Report 2024 records 144,708 passes from 207,089 tests, a 69.9% pass rate we derived that counts tests, not people.

Learner Permit Ireland: How to Get One and the Rules
How do you get a learner permit in Ireland after the theory test?
You get a learner permit in Ireland by passing the theory test for your category, then applying to the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) in person or online with evidence of your legal right to reside, an eyesight report or a medical report for trucks and buses, and a €45 fee. A permit usually lasts 2 years.

What do you bring to the theory test in Ireland, and what happens on the day?
Bring one original identity document from the seven that theorytest.ie accepts, such as a passport valid for international use or no more than 12 months expired, and arrive 30 minutes early for check-in; the Irish car test is then 40 questions in 45 minutes with 35 needed to pass (theorytest.ie, read 16 September 2026).
