Rules of the road
The theory test asks how Irish traffic law works in ordinary situations: which limit applies where there is no sign, who yields at a junction, what a stop line means, what you must produce when a Garda stops you. Each rule below names the provision it rests on.
Lessons inside: Speed limits, Roundabouts.

Risk perception
Risk perception asks what speed, weather and your own state do to the distance you need in order to stop. Alcohol, drugs, medicines, tiredness and distraction sit here, and so do following distance and road holding. Part of the area is law and part is advice, and every rule below says which it is.
Lessons inside: Stopping distances.

Hazard awareness
Hazard awareness is about what you can and cannot see, and who is likely to be there: light, weather, time of day, road surface, pedestrians, cyclists and children near a school. Ireland has no clip-based hazard perception section, so the area is examined in writing like everything else. What the law sets out is when your lamps must be lit and who you must yield to.
Lessons inside: Vulnerable road users and cyclists.

Eco-driving
Eco-driving is one of the five topic names the Road Safety Authority and the test operator list for the theory test. In Irish law the area is thin: the Acts and Regulations read cover horn use, tyre condition, leaving a vehicle safely, recharging bays and speed limiters, and none sets a rule about fuel use. The content standard behind the test comes from an EU annex, which is where emissions are named.

Safe driving behaviour
This area covers what you do for the people in your vehicle and for the people around it: seat belts, child restraints, loads and overhangs, tyre condition, helmets and what happens when something goes wrong on the road. Almost all of it sits in Regulations with a figure attached, so a question here usually turns on a number or on which person carries the duty.

Questions in each study area, by test
A question can belong to more than one test, so it can count in more than one column. The study area cards give each question once.
