Questions people ask
Is the motorcycle theory test the same as the car theory test?
No, they are separate exams that happen to run to the same shape. The motorcycle and moped test (AM) and the car, tractor and work vehicle test (BW) share a question count, a time and a pass mark, all set out above, and each one covers its own group of licence categories. A pass in one does not stand in for the other.
How many mistakes can you make in the theory test?
The official pages set a pass mark in correct answers rather than a mistakes allowance, so the margin is whatever is left once the pass mark is taken from the question count in the table above. Any mistakes figure you see on this site is our arithmetic on those two rows, and it is not an official number.
Is the Irish theory test multiple choice?
Yes. Every question is multiple choice and one answer is ticked. Answer options can be struck out by right-clicking, and the question text can be highlighted while the options cannot.
Can you skip a question and come back to it?
Yes, at any point inside the test time. Questions can be skipped or marked and returned to, an answer can be cancelled and another chosen, and everything can be reviewed and changed before you finish. A candidate who is done early may leave the test.
What happens at the start of the theory test?
A short tutorial runs first and carries practice questions of its own. After it, the exam questions are drawn at random from the question bank for the sections of the test being sat, with a countdown and progress tracking on screen throughout.
How do you get the theory test result?
The pass or fail appears on screen at the end of the test, and a score report follows by email grouping the answers by category area. Nothing is fed back on individual questions, so the report does not list the ones you got wrong.
Is the theory test sat online or at a test centre?
The official sources disagree. The body text of the RSA how to apply page describes booking at a test centre location and the operator publishes the list of those centres, while the meta descriptions of two RSA pages say the test can be taken online. Both readings sit at the end of this page with their links, and we choose between neither.
How many driver theory test categories are there?
This page never prints one number for that, because the two official lists differ. theorytest.ie lists the AM, BW, C, D and CD tests, while rsa.ie lists four driver theory tests and adds that instructor and Driver CPC tests exist as well. Both lists are shown at the end of the page with their sources.
What we could not confirm, and where we looked
Number of answer options per question as a published rule
Not published. No official page states how many answer options a question carries. We checked Citizens Information, the FAQs in English and Irish, the accessibility and support pages, the three booking pages and the theory test pages on rsa.ie.

Size of the official Driver Theory Test question bank
Not published. How many questions the test draws from is not given on any official page. We checked the FAQs, revision material and posts on the booking site, the three booking pages, Citizens Information, the theory test pages on rsa.ie and the shop.

Number of Driver Theory Test categories
The official sources disagree
Five test categories are listed on theorytest.ie: AM, BW, C, D and CD. rsa.ie lists four, A, BW, C and D, leaving out the combined test. Neither list counts the truck or bus module tests.

Where the Driver Theory Test is sat
The official sources disagree
The body of the rsa.ie how to apply page says the test is booked at one of 40 test centre locations, and theorytest.ie lists those centres. The text shown under two rsa.ie pages in search results says the test can be taken online.
