Questions people ask
How soon can you retake the theory test in Ireland?
Almost at once, with advice to leave a gap. theorytest.ie strongly advises waiting at least three complete business days before sitting again, while rsa.ie words it as applying for a new test after three days. Nothing caps the number of attempts, and the fee is due every time.
Do you find out which questions you got wrong?
No. Nothing is fed back on individual questions. A candidate who fails is given the general topic areas of weakness in writing, and the emailed score report groups answers by category area, so you learn where you were weak rather than which question caught you out.
Will you get the same questions the second time?
There is no way to know. Questions are drawn at random from the question bank for the sections of the test being sat, and the size of that bank is not published, so nobody outside the service can say how much repeats. Treat each sitting as a fresh draw.
Can you appeal a theory test result?
Yes, and the fee is refunded where the marking is found to have been wrong. The official sources disagree on how long you have: the operator FAQs count days from the exam, while its customer charter and Citizens Information count working days. Both wordings sit in the row above and neither is chosen here.
Does a theory test pass expire?
Yes. The certificate runs for the period in the table above from the test date, and a first learner permit application in that category needs a valid pass in hand. Let the certificate lapse and the test is sat again.
Can you move a theory test booking without losing the fee?
Sometimes, and the rules for it conflict: on this point the official sources disagree. One theorytest.ie page sets a calendar day notice with a part refund in the middle band, and its own FAQs, Citizens Information and rsa.ie set a business day rule. Give as much notice as you can, and read both rows before you commit.
What happens if you arrive late or without the right identification?
There is no test and the fee is gone. Identification is scanned at check-in and must be an original, so a photograph or a photocopy is refused at the desk. The rows above carry both rules.
How should you prepare for a second attempt?
Start with the topic areas named in the written feedback, then sit a full run against the real clock rather than reading answers back. The exam does not soften on a second attempt, so a timed sitting is the closest check on whether the gap has closed.
